The Tree of Life
image is an ancient one, found in the mythologies of the
earliest civilizations. In these cultures' faith stories,
it was a tree bearing magic fruit and was therefore
reserved for the gods alone.
It is found, as
well, in both the Christian and Jewish faiths, appearing
in Genesis, the first book of the Jewish Testament. In
the story of Eden, the Tree of Life was the tree whose
fruit would give eternal life and blessing to those who
ate it. It could, however, only be eaten by the innocent;
this led to the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden
following their disastrous taste of the forbidden fruit
from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
Among Christians,
it is generally understood as foreshadowing both the Last
Supper, referencing the Eucharist, and the cross of the
New Testament. In Judaism's Kaballah, the Tree of Life
offers the key not only to finding the way to God but
also to understanding how all creation came to be.
In
the British Isles, the Celtic peoples also had respect
for the Tree of Life. Each settlement had a designated
Tree of Life which was a powerful symbol for the people
and the site for important ceremonies.
Most cultures and
traditions had reverence for the Tree of Life. It was
important to many of the various pagan cultures, and some
say it was their Tree of Life which became Christianized
as our Christmas tree.
And
Now...
Today, the Tree
of Life is an important symbol to people of many
philosophies and traditions. Among Christians, pagans,
and Jewish people, it has tremendous religious
significance.
For people of a
spiritual bent, the Tree of Life symbolizes the unity of
all living things. It represents for them, as well, the
spiritual quest of earthly beings to achieve spiritual
understanding.
Metaphorically,
the tree represents humanity's essence as both spiritual
and earthly beings. Many popular meditations honour the
dual spiritual and physical reality with imagery of roots
burrowing deep into the earth and branches stretching to
the stars.
In popular
culture, the Tree of Life has been incorporated in family
jewellery. Often, this image is decorated with
birthstones or photographs of family members, either
living or deceased.
